I will tell you that our psychologist ... has not had a moment to breathe since these allegations broke. It's been very, very busy.
This is not something that catches us by surprise. We have always had the simmering tensions of a city that is quite diverse ? that is, a working-class or lower-middle-class city with a quite affluent university right in the middle of it.
Duke is not unique. I have worked at a lot of women's centers around the country, and I don't know of any school around the country where it doesn't happen.
I just don't know. Innocent until proven guilty is a critical presumption. But these are such serious charges.
At least at Duke, you can't get away from this case. It's all people talk about. If your coping strategy for dealing with your assault is to not think about it, that's not an option here.
