The prime minister has a lot of explaining to do.

He could have tackled the unfair tax system. He could have made the environment a priority. He could have faced up to the pensions crisis. He could have addressed the problem of personal debt. He has declined to do any of these. This is a legacy from which it will be difficult for him to escape.

It is essential that we establish yet again in this country that sexuality is no bar to public office of any kind.

We had our best election result in 2005 and we have a responsibility to use that to take us forward.

We need full disclosure by our government. If, in fact, people are being moved from a jurisdiction where torture is illegal to a jurisdiction where torture is permissible, that seems to me to be wholly contrary to international law.

The existing law is quite adequate to the problem.

Yet again, this issue will be raised in capitals throughout the Middle East, and perhaps most importantly in the streets of these Arab capitals. It makes the task of the coalition forces in Iraq yet more difficult.

Two and a half years on, we must begin to bring this occupation to an end.

So while Conservatives may think that youth, inexperience, and naivete are the answer to their problems; I say they are not the answer to the country's problems.

At a time when some of our critics have been quick to writes us off, I intend to reassert our credibility and authority. This movement has been fighting for Liberalism for a century and a half. A great cause is not going to be destroyed in a month and a half.

It should not be nine years or nine days that the Prime Minister should be worried about but the fact that his nine lives are almost used up.
