Small businesses tend to be too small to hire consultants to help meet safety regulations. Sometimes small business owners are afraid of getting on Labor and Industries' radar screen.

Owners will see more information from L&I that makes sense to them. We're also be more willing to listen to comments, suggestions and problems and be more willing to act.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. We now have a greater tendency to help owners fix things instead of force compliance.

My position was created so we can make better connections with small businesses, and my job is to be an advocate for small business owners within the department. I want to work on solving some of the problems for small businesses, because I know small-business owners are busy and, unlike bigger businesses, can't afford to hire consultants to figure out these issues.
