We're going to continue our investigation into how an experienced detective working homicide could let this happen. It really falls on negligence ... and it's costing the taxpayers over $1 million in sanctions.
Why should we pay if we're not culpable of anything? They're trying to hold the taxpayers responsible, and based on the media reports I've seen, there has been no link.
It's unfortunate, but we don't have any choice. We had a case here where an experienced detective made a mistake and the city and its taxpayers have to pay for it.
I'm not prepared to pay $18 million to settle that case.
If he made commitments when running, he has to listen to them. I think having a dialogue with them is good it's when you don't speak to people that it gets worse.
