I did three of the original 'Twilight Zone' episodes, yes. Also, I did a little thing in the feature film, and then I wrote one of the episodes in 'The Twilight Zone's last round where I starred with Cloris Leachman and my daughter Liliana in a true sequel to 'It's a Good Life.' So, yes, I have a good 'Twilight Zone' alumni jacket.

But a funny thing happened four years later. I was invited to play for an alumni team against the Red Wings.

I went to James Monroe High School, a big school in the East Bronx. My first promotion was the first alumni reunion dance. I got all the names and addresses out of the yearbook. It came off very well.

Our students have to pay to go the game; they were tremendous. It gives our team a lot of confidence. We have proven ourselves to be a competitive team in the Atlantic 10 with less than most of what other teams have. We've been patient, and we have a lot of good things going here. I've been a university president now for about 20 years and I have never found any relationship between alumni giving to academic programs and the success of the athletic program. Most senior fundraisers understand that raising money for the academic program is not going to be affected by that. They may be able to build a bigger stadium or put new seats in the gym, but it is not going to put more endowed chairs in their faculty.

These alumni are aware of funding issues confronting their initiative and are committed to accomplishing funding requirements inherent in law school start-up and operation.

Teams that play games on Saturday, half of them win and half of them lose no matter how much everybody spends. The real finding is there is absolutely not a shred of evidence that if all major college athletic programs were to cut spending by, say, 25 percent or even 50 percent that there would be any reduction in the gains attributed to athletic programs -- financial, alumni donations. All of those gains would proceed on pace.

Alumni Hall worked great, and he's trained real well and he's sharp. You get indecisive when you have another race that suits him 20 miles away. Of course, the Gold Cup is a great race so we're kind of on the fence right now, but we'll have a decision pretty soon.

This memorial garden, designed to spring into life each September, will be a living memorial to the alumni who were lost. It is a quiet place to reflect about the importance of friends, family and life, amidst a turbulent world.

There's always pressure that way, with the alumni who played here. That's a given coming in. That has not affected us. I think all teams are different.
