If we can help people start thinking about what resources they have and understanding that they're available in Broward for their family members, and if they're aware of the services, they may be able to live independently a lot longer, if we just provide the support.

We offered a range of services. Some people needed food, and many disabled residents and seniors were asking for assistance. We set up telephones for public use, set up computers so residents could send e-mails, provided information on available housing, and helped file applications to FEMA for assistance.

It's a competitive process where anybody can apply for funding.

The commission each year needs to accept it. It's a one-year agreement that's renewed three times. This is the second year.
