For most of the 20th century, the secular perspective moved forward and was in the ascendancy. Recently however, conservative Christians have been on the offensive, recovering some of that lost ground.

I think this event will show something very important, which is that the evangelical community is not monolithic. I think they disagree on many things, and I think that will surprise people. A lot of people believe evangelicals speak with one voice and showing that isn't so serves the long-term goals of both men.

My sense is that at least in this state, Kerry is playing to tie on the foreign policy questions and the so-called values issues, the shorthand for which is God and guns. He comes into Ohio and he talks about being a sportsman, he talks about his military record, he talks about his faith, but he probably can't win on those issues,

Restaurants come to an area after all the homes are already there. It's the new office space that is leading the construction industry right now. That is what is attracting the investment money.

Many evangelicals have very positive views toward Jews, and evangelicals support Israel. And it's interesting that in the protests of these cartoons, the language quickly turned anti-Semitic and anti-Israel. That sends up a red flag for evangelical Christians.

I think overall there is some disenchantment with the president's tax cuts -- not themselves, but because it doesn't seem to be doing what he claims it's doing, which is to overcome the job loss and create new jobs.

Many Americans think these religious ideas should be taught in school because they believe them and they're true. But a lot of Americans say that because they think it's fair.
