We're investigating what happened and why. Apparently they went there as an act of protest and were not going to leave.

We were aware of that opinion and thought it was being applied. That is certainly part of our investigation.

What we're examining in this investigation is if there were alternatives to automatically releasing him.

Obviously, he wasn't an outstanding prisoner. That's why he was denied parole four times, but there's certainly nothing about his conduct (in prison) to indicate torture and murder.

We're obviously looking into the circumstances surrounding this, what the prisoners' purpose was and what exactly happened. It was an apparent act of protest.

There's not a shred of truth to that.

Our desire was that he be reviewed by the parole board for those serious violations. Unfortunately that did not occur.

One group was upset about the way this was handled.

It was a rapid retreat once they saw the emergency team advancing.

It is the program's intent to remove any barriers that would prevent them from getting a job, paying taxes and abstaining from illegal behavior. Before, it didn't take a genius to figure out it wouldn't be long before they'd go back to stealing, selling drugs, whatever it took to make a living.

In any case, if there's information a parolee is using drugs or alcohol, that is definitely something we would like to know.

If he had gone to the board, they could have decided to continue his probation or reinstate the remaining two years on his original sentence for armed robbery.

If he's truly interested in reducing parolee crime, he should show up and attend these meetings.

These are human beings who have a long history of failing to comply with laws, and were not going to say this is a cure-all. But we hope we can see at least a modest reduction.
