When trying to decide what to see, Tom's and my philosophy is to choose the films that sound the least interesting to you. They normally turn out to be the most pleasant surprises.

Our choice of Mickey is so obvious. He has been around so long he has become a part of American history. It just took a while to recognize his value as a national treasure. Mickey was a star at the same time Gloria Swanson reigned, the Telluride Film Festival's very first Silver Medallion recipient. After his crash, we thought his career had ended when he appeared in noir quickies, but he was rediscovered by Francis Ford Coppola and played Henry in 'The Black Stallion.' Mickey went on to win an Emmy for his performance of a mentally impaired man in 'Bill.' He still performs in live shows. No one has seen more of Hollywood than Mickey.

With all the festivals out there in the world today, everyone is here.

This year is also shaping up to be a very literate and literary Festival.

This Spanish masterpiece was released the first year of our Festival, in 1973, but it has not been seen in this country until now. It will soon be out on DVD.

These two companies, along with the dozens of imitators who have followed in their path, have made America a terrific place to be a movie buff.

The Festival's bent on remembering the past is also present.

In honor of this film, our opening night feed features Cuban food and Andy, who plays bongos, is scheduled to be part of a band.
