We've beaten a couple of very good teams. We're pretty happy with the way the kids have performed. We're a young team and still feeling our way through.
Getting an early lead was important. We needed our kids to believe that we could get to Roth. He is a very accomplished pitcher. We were looking to scratch out runs any way we could. That one run provided us with a bit of confidence and momentum.
He had a real good last inning for us. He made good pitches when he needed to.
He had another great outing. He really had them off balance with a nasty curve. For not being a true pitcher, he certainly has done a great job.
He was outstanding. He had the lineup completely off-balance for the entire game. He mixed speeds extremely well and it his spots. We were pretty amazed at how well he handled himself against a team like Southern.
I think it is a great thing that we've got all these guys competing for starting positions. It keeps everybody on their toes and sharp. When you are rebuilding a team like we are, you need to take a good, long look at as many players as you can to find the right combinations.
Our defense wasn't there in this one. We made way too many mistakes that led to their runs.
We've got a few guys who are swinging the bats really well. Hopefully, the hitting becomes contagious. We'd like to see some more guys contribute offensively.
We've got a bunch of arms to put out there. But the question is experience. These guys will be getting that experience as they go along.
We lost all of our starting pitching from the last two seasons. We had a number of solid arms the past two years. They carried us and were a huge part of why we performed at such a high level.
Coming from behind is always a nice way to win. The kids are playing hard. We were able to get the first two guys on and that really applied the pressure to their pitcher.
The timely hits came our way in this game. To come up with a pair of two-out rallies against a pitcher like Roth shows our guys were not going to quit in this one.
It was a real good week for us. Our pitching held up and we looked good in key spots at the plate. With the amount of youth on our squad this year, we fully understand it is going to take time to get everybody on the same page. So far, we're real pleased with our start.
It's going to be an interesting season. We want to be as competitive as we can be on a game-to-game basis. I think this group is going to get better with each game. If we can remained composed and cut down on mistakes, we're going to be OK.
It was nice to be able to get Bert a bit of lead early in the game. We had a number of guys deliver key hits with men on base. That's the way our offense has to work this season. We need to get guys on, move them over, and deliver in clutch spots. We did a good job of that in this game.
He struggled a little with his control also, but managed to avoid getting hurt by the walks. It is still early in the season and our pitchers are a little inexperienced. In time, they are going to get better and be around the plate more.
He throws a lot of first pitch strikes. He doesn't fall behind in the count and that allows him to go to the off speed pitches. When his curve is working it makes his fastball look 10 miles per hour faster.
