I think both ways are ways to make the world a better place and to reduce the suffering.
There's no question that people way overestimate their chances of winning. Wanting something to be true makes people more likely to think it is true.
After a short period of time, they return very closely to where they were before. It doesn't make that much difference in their lives to win the lottery.
It's clear that income makes people happier. That's strongest for the lower levels of income.
