Guys when they get tired they lose their location. What happens is they got reach back and give a little extra to maintain what they got and your location suffers but you maintain your velocity.
We gave them some extra outs and it took our offence a while to get going. But for the most part our pitchers were around the plate.
Ted (Lilly) has a bad back right now, something he felt the day after his last start (March 26). So we'll give him an extra day of rest and have Josh (Towers) start the second game and Lilly the third.
There were days in spring training when I would approach him after he got a couple of at bats and ask him if he had had enough. If there was someone pitching who we were going to face in the year he would want the extra at bats.
That first week of the season, without having an off-day, you never know how far the starters are going to go. So we may need that extra arm down there.
