Pianists have the Van Cliburn competition and guitarists have a number of contests, as well, but the electric bass is such a young instrument, relatively speaking, that this sort of thing just hasn't happened until now. Victor and I have been talking about this for a couple of years because we go around the world and we bump in to people who just blow us away. They've been practicing for years on this stuff that nobody's ever heard. They might be well-known players or just hiding out in a practice room working on techniques we don't even known about.

We've got all these living legends in the bass world and we're all going to play as well at the end of the night, ... We just wanted to bring a really unique event to the Myrtle Beach area. This would be an instantly sold-out show in Los Angeles or New York or any major city, and I think it's cool that the people at CCU had the vision to bring this here.

The first-place prize is nice, but maybe more valuable than that is that all finalists will be featured in Bass Player magazine, which is our industry standard journal. They'll become known throughout the United States and around the world. They'll also get a chance to record with Victor and myself on the next Bass Extremes album.
